Visual Communication Write-Up

When Sister Caryn Esplin came to our early class to teach us about Visual Communication, I was immediately drawn into her presentation. The gorgeous pictures and art pieces she brought in were quite the attention grabber! I think the whole group was mystified by so many breathtaking pieces. It definitely was a great way to emphasis the importance and power that visual communication can and does have.

Being a News/ Journalism emphasis, I didn’t think I’d get much out of this class. But I was wrong! I was re-taught the famous line “a picture is worth a thousands words.”  I learned how powerful an image can be in making a person think or feel a certain way. So much emotion, thought, and feeling can come from a well chosen or created image. News/ Journalism deals with images as well as words. Pictures are a great way to capture the attention of an audience- to get them to want to read and know more! I will definitely use that fact to my advantage throughout my studies in Communications.

Journalism Write-Up

I learned so much on May 8th when Brother Lane Williams came to present in our class. The main thing being how important it is to work on your writing skills! We all know the main point of the communication process is the message that is being transmitted between the sender and the receiver. The importance of exceptional writing skills is obviously crucial if you decide to be a journalism major, but honestly, no matter what emphasis you decide to work toward, you need to have outstanding writing skills in all areas of communication. Like Sister Scholes said after her end-of-class quiz, you need to be a good writer because people won’t be hired to do it for you!

This class was so helpful for me because I recently decided to make News/ Journalism my emphasis. I appreciated him speaking about how important journalism is for the local community, for America, and for the entire world (how else are people suppose to learn about what is happening around them?). That was so motivating! Also, when he went over the classes we needed to be signed up for, that was perfect information to assist me in filling out my grad plan!

I-Comm Write up

Brother John Thompson came to our Intro to Comm class on the first of May to speak to us about I-Comm. It was an awesome presentation. The main convincing points he brought up as to why we should get involved with I-Comm were the technology, the networking, and the experience. He mentioned technology the students work with is used in the actual, real work places. We will be trained in I-Comm to know how to navigate around on the kind of technology we will actually use after we graduate! What a help that will be. Brother Thompson also mentioned networking. I-Comm will connect students with people who are connected with people who could help them get a future career! Soapbox, for example, allows students to work with real companies that are on and off campus!! That is an incredibly special way to closely network with real employers and companies while being a student. Last, I-Comm is an amazing way to get helpful experience that will help later on toward your career, and be a great thing to put on your resume.

I’ve made my grad plan since Brother Thompson came to class, and because he spoke with such passion about scroll and soapbox, I made sure to include Comm 397R as I planned out my future classes. I plan to take it after I return from my mission, and am so excited to get involved with Scroll. Also, because my emphasis is News/ Journalism, I know that working with Scroll will give me the kind of experience I need, as well as be a great thing to add to my resume.
